EARLY WORKS

AUTHOR'S NOTES:
These are lovely books from a widely distributed and highly affordable series. The "author" basically writes captions to accompany color photographs selected by the editor. The photographs are submitted for free as part of a contest with winners getting copies of the book, a clever way to keep costs down and allow a showcase for largely amateur photographers.

AUTHOR'S NOTES
This was a product of a city committee celebrating the 375th anniversary of the founding of Portsmouth, NH in 1998. There was (and still is) no history of the city in print, so I sketched out a quick layout and content for a souvenir brochure. Brown & Company created a great logo and designed and produced the booklet on high quality paper. Long story short, when we offered to deliver copies to local high school students, the school declined to distribute them for free. I ended up with about 1,000 copies and--even though the booklet is full of advertising--it has become a popular collectible item and sells like crazy at Discover Portsmouth. Two decades later I'm afraid to reread the thing for fear of what I might have written back in the day.
